Our proud history
The history of Generaal Alberts Primary School is deeply rooted in the rich heritage of Alberton itself. The story begins with Johannes Petrus Meyer, who at the age of 13 purchased 11 hectares of his father’s farm, Elandsfontein — the area known today as Alberton. He built his home near the Alberton stream, close to where the current civic centre stands today.
Over the years, the Meyer family played an important role in the development of the town. After Jan Meyer’s passing, his brother Johan Georg (“Org”) Meyer took over the farm. During this period, General Alberts purchased a portion of the Elandsfontein farm with the vision of developing and selling the land. Since the Meyer family originally came from Prince Albert in the Cape Colony, General Alberts chose the name Alberton for the growing town.
The first families settled in Alberton in the early 1900s, and the town steadily developed with schools, businesses, roads, street lights, and community facilities. By 1918 Alberton had its first town hall and factory, and by 1926 the roads were tarred and the first official post office opened its doors.
Education became an important part of the growing community, and on 11 August 1947, the New Redruth School officially opened. On 8 October 1956, the school proudly changed its name to Laerskool Generaal Alberts. At the time, the school consisted of only 148 learners and 5 staff members, with Afrikaans as the medium of instruction.
In 1994, the school transitioned from a single-medium Afrikaans school to a parallel-medium institution, embracing diversity and growth within the community.
Today, Generaal Alberts Primary School is home to approximately 1200 learners and continues to uphold its proud tradition of excellence, community values, and holistic education.
As one of the oldest primary schools in Alberton, Generaal Alberts remains a school with a rich heritage and a bright future.
